Tupelo Dentist- Dr. John Kenney's "Your Dental Health" - What is Burning Mouth Syndrome
Transcription
Speaker 1: Your dental health brought to you by Tupelo Smiles Family and Cosmetic Dentistry.
John Kenney: Spicy food isn't the only thing that can leave your mouth burning. Burning mouth syndrome is a common and complex problem that causes patients to experience a burning or scalding pain on the lips, tongue, and sometimes the back of the mouth. BMS usually shows no visible signs of irritation and the cause of the condition could be multiple factors ranging from vitamin deficiencies to menopause. BMS is estimated to affect up to 5% of Americans and is most common in people over over 60 years of age. Both sexes are susceptible to BMS, however, it occurs more frequently in older women. Other symptoms of BMS could include a dry mouth, a bitter taste, or even a metallic taste. Patients say the pain is gradual and spontaneous and can intensify as the day goes on.
John Kenney: If you think you might have BMS, consult your dentist. He or she will be able to provide multiple options for relief. For your dental health, I'm Dr. John Kenney.
